Community Hero: Cindy Atkinson

It started with brain tumor parties if you can believe that, Cindy Atkinson said.
A way for those diagnosed with one of the rarest types of cancer to bond with each other, share advice and just hang out.

Atkinson’s husband, Tom, a contractor and the co-owner of O’Malley’s on Main in Seal Beach, was diagnosed with glioblastoma multiforme, one of the most aggressive forms of brain cancer, six years ago. The brain tumor was inoperable. Atkinson stepped back from her job and took her husband from place to place in search of treatment options. “I did everything that I could to save his life,” she said. “It was scary, it was the worst of times, but I also made lifelong friends that will be friends the rest of my life.”
