Skin/Facial Care
Q: What types of treatments are the most popular right now?A: Botox and laser hair removal as well as juvederm, which is like rystalane but gives a softer fill for fine lines and lasts about 6-to-8 months. It’s usually injected into the skin under the eyes, and around the mouth and lips. We also have a vitalizing peel that clears up acne and other blemishes. It lightens scars by removing the dead layer of skin on the face and freshens it up. The face becomes a lot softer and radiant after that. The procedure only takes about 30 minutes and there’s no pain involved like some other more aggressive peels. Jennifer Rascoe, ImageRx Q: What is the newest technology in the field of esthetic skincare you have incorporated at your facility? A: An Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) photofacial is a solution for more youthful-looking skin with no minimal time. Rosacea, broken capillaries, redness, discolorations, brown spots and acne scars are all effectively treated with a series of IPL’s. This is a mixture of many wavelengths and colors of light which work beneath the skin’s surface to diminish appearance abnormalities. The benefits of photofacials include improvement of collagen production, reduction of minor wrinkles and fine lines and reducing the appearance of large pores. A series of 3-to-6 is needed to gradually improve skin and attain an even skin tone. Scott Botma, Executive Fitness & Med Spa Q: What do you think is the most important part of feeling your best? A: Taking care of your skin and eliminating fine lines and wrinkles really does increase your self-esteem. I am amazed at how many people are dating and when you talk to someone they are focusing on your eyes. It eliminates that frown you get from lines in the face and makes you more approachable. Jennifer Rascoe, Image Rx Q: What type of treatment is best to get your body ready for summer? A: Laser hair removal offers the convenience of not having to shave, tweeze or wax. Removal is quick and easy with proven long-term results. The laser beam generates a wavelength of light and energy that is selectively absorbed by the melanin (color) of the hair. The absorption of the laser disables the follicle’s ability to grow hair. Multiple treatments are necessary and are spaced approximately 6- to-8 weeks apart. Sunblock is a must and you need to avoid direct sun exposure for two weeks prior to and after a treatment. Scott Botma, Executive Fitness & Med Spa Q: What treatments do you recommend for those who want to maintain a healthy and youthful look? A: Sunblock, sunblock, sunblock! That is definitely the most important things to keep your skin looking fresh and young. You have to start when you are younger and use at least a daily 30 SPF sunblock or clear zinc blocks with UVA and UVB protection on your face. A daily skin care regimen is key to maintaining healthy looking skin as well. Jennifer Rascoe, Image Rx Q: Are there any products you recommend this summer? A: Our favorite sunscreen is the Obagi Healthy Skin Protection SPF 35. It is a lightweight, non-greasy broad-spectrum UVA/UVB sunscreen recommended by the Skin Cancer Foundation. For environmentally-damaged skin, we recommend the EF Skincare RX Copper Peptide Co-Q10 Serum with 10% Hyaluronic Acid. Copper Peptide promotes collagen and elastin synthesis while reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Co-Enzyme Q-10 is an antioxidant that improves the appearance of photo-damaged skin. Hyaluronic Acid promotes the growth of new cells and healing, particularly following laser services, peels or microdermabrasion treatments. Scott Botma, Executive Fitness & Med Spa A: Here at Dean Anthony, we feel sunscreen is not an option. We offer several facial lotions for men with SPF that will help prevent sunburn and moisturize the skin, keeping you looking younger, longer. One of them is Anthony Logistics for Men, an oil-free facial lotion with SPF 15. We also recommend Anthony Logistics for Men’s Deep Pore Cleansing Clay Mask. It helps degrease your face, while toning and nourishing your skin with vitamins A, C and E. This clay should be used twice a week. Scott Shelton, Dean Anthony Q: Do you offer any promotions or discounts to Long Beach residents? A: Any clients who come in and mention this article, we’ll take 15% off of any service. Jennifer Rascoe, Image Rx Cosmetic Dentistry
Q: When do you decide oral/corrective surgery is a priority?A: It’s completely up to the patient. If he or she is experiencing pain or wants to address cosmetic issues like a gummy smile or an unbalanced facial profile, then I will help find the solution that is right for him or her. Q: What do you recommend for people who have an over/under bite? A: Patients with a significant over or under-bite may have difficulty chewing or speaking. Their profile may also be significantly affected. If left untreated, they may experience excessive dental wear or develop problems with their temporomandibular joint (TMJ.) Small under/over-bites can be treated with braces. Larger ones usually require jaw surgery to place the jaws in the correct position. When done correctly, they will have a stable bite and a beautiful profile. Q: To whom would you recommend dental implants? A: Dental implants are the optimal solution for missing teeth. These “artificial tooth roots” can be used to replace congenitally missing teeth in teenagers, in place of a bridge if a tooth is lost in adulthood or to completely reconstruct the bite if multiple teeth have been lost to periodontal disease or trauma. I have placed implants in patients as young as 16 and as old as 84. Q: What is the biggest advantage to dental implants? A: There are many significant advantages to using implants to replace missing teeth. First, using implants allows for the most natural and cosmetic outcome. Second, natural teeth do not have to be ground down as is the case with bridges. Third, it prevents further loss of bone over time. Fourth, it offers the most predictable long-term prognosis. Q: How invasive is the procedure? A: In recent years, significant advances have been made in the field of implant dentistry. I specialize in minimally invasive placement. Because no incision is made in the gums, there is only minimal discomfort and virtually no swelling. I have also perfected techniques to provide patients with a temporary tooth at the time of surgery. Frequently, patients can enter the office with a gap and leave with an implant-supported tooth in under an hour. Their dentist can provide them with a permanent tooth several months later, once the implant has integrated completely. This allows patients to look their best without having to take a significant time off from work. Tim Silegy, OFMS, DDS Make your body work for you
Fitness
Q: What types of exercise would you recommend for a beginner
looking to lose weight and build lean muscle?A: They should start with a light weight lifting program about three times a week and 30 minutes of cardio about five times a week. Basically, getting the heart rate above 120-140 beats per minute. Josh Tims, Belmont Shore Athletic Club Q: If trying to build lean muscle mass, how many repetitions and sets would you recommend a beginner start with for each exercise during weight training? A: For a beginner, 15-20 repetitions with two to three sets of each exercise are good. You will want to choose a weight that is light enough to manage because it decreases the possibility of getting injured. Casey Kammell, Executive Fitness & Med Spa Q: How much time do you recommend per workout session and in what areas? A: We recommend working out for 45-60 minutes, 3 days a week, for a beginner. Gradually increase your intensity and work your way up to 5-6 days a week. The ratio of cardio versus strength training is very personalized and depends upon your fitness goals. For maximum weight loss, you must include strength training, but with a focus on cardio. For building muscle, focus more on strength training. Casey Kammell, Executive Fitness & Med Spa A: For a beginner I definitely wouldn’t recommend going more than 45 minutes during weight training. That really wouldn’t be fun. Josh Tims, Belmont Shore Athletic Club Q: What is circuit training? A: It’s a really great work out for the entire body. You have 5-8 different exercises and you go from one to the next, keeping your heart rate up the entire time. You circulate the entire station for 30-45 minutes. The benefits are great because you are doing a combination of cardio and weight training. Josh Tims, Belmont Shore Athletic Club Q: What are the benefits of circuit training? A: Circuit training is a perfect way to kick-up the intensity of your workout. In the proper setting, it maximizes your time and allows you to keep your heart rate elevated during the entire workout. The higher your heart rate, the more calories you are burning! Group circuit workouts with high-energy music can be motivating and inspiring. Just remember to go at your own pace and make sure there is trained staff available to help you. Casey Kammell, Executive Fitness and Med Spa Q: Is this style suitable for people in their 20’s, 30’s, 40’s and up? A: Circuit training is suitable for anyone, as long as there are trained staff members on hand to help modify any exercises. For our circuit workouts, we see clients from their 20’s to their 60’s. If you have a limitation like bad knees or a sore shoulder, your trainer can select a new exercise for you without interrupting the flow of the circuit. Casey Kammell, Executive Fitness and Med Spa Q: What do you think is the most important part of a fitness program? A: Diversity. A fitness program needs to incorporate a variety of exercises. A diverse program keeps you from getting bored. Your body is always changing to meet the demands of different exercises. This method produces results. Casey Kammell, Executive Fitness and Med Spa A: Enjoy it! If your fitness program is not enjoyable, you won’t stick with it. If you’re not a gym person, you can’t enjoy being coopedup in a gym or pretend you’re somewhere else while you’re working out. You should try getting involved in an outdoor routine or with a group. Camaraderie will help you stick with a program longer. Try outdoor volleyball, water sports, or walking on the beach. Josh Tims, Belmont Shore Athletic Club Q: How does the boot camp style of training help people stick with the fitness program? A: Boot Camp was designed to keep people involved with fitness. Many times, people quit working out due to boredom, lack of a workout buddy or motivation. At Boot Camp, the workouts are ever-changing so no one gets bored. Friendships are made from the first day, so accountability begins quickly. We are all a team, so we count on everyone being there for the entire 4-week session they signed up for. We know when you haven’t been there. We are all a great support team. Q: How is boot camp fitness different from other types of programs (ie. kickboxing, pilates, karate)? A: The main difference between Boot Camp and other workouts is the fact that we work out outdoors! We keep the Boot Campers fit, in the fresh air of sunny Southern California. We also train the entire body by using exercise bands, body-weighted activities, and 5-10 lb hand weights. Very little equipment is necessary to train and shape the body into what we have always wanted. Q: Is it equally appealing to men? Women? What about teens? A: Men and Women find the outdoor environment and the camaraderie of the other Boot Campers in class to be the main appeal. They also find the structured regime of physical activity and nutritional counseling a necessity to achieve their personal fitness goals. Q: What advice do you have for people intimidated by joining boot camp style programs? A: Why be intimidated by looking and feeling great! It will only cost you some sweat, sore muscles and accountability to get to your goals. Remember, Boot Camp is “go at your own pace,” so there are no excuses! Salon Style
Q: What hot products or trends are you seeing with men’s
hairstyles?A: Guys have to remember this summer isn’t about every hair being in place. The stylists at Dean Anthony are teaching our clients that less is more. When using Sumo Tech by Bumble & Bumble, you’re not trying to spackle a wall. Guys, a little but goes a long way and when trying to get the look like you spent all day at the beach, even though you may be miles away, we recommend Bumble & Bumble Surf Spray. It has plenty of hold with a matte finish. You can use it on towel-dried hair and style. It’s as easy as that. Dean Anthony also offers clients a gray camouflage to blend hair to make it appear less gray. For you guys out there who want to take a minimum of five years off of your look, just give us 20 minutes and we’ll camouflage your gray in a private setting because what guy wants to be in public display with color on his head? Come have an icy cold one on us while receiving custom color, haircuts and a relaxing seven-towel straight-edge shave. Finally, there’s a salon that’s not only about women because men deserve to be pampered too and in a private setting. Watch the game on our flat screen televisions or be entertained with Playstation and X-Box, while you get a facial, massage or 20-digit dressing (manicure and pedicure). Scott Shelton, Dean Anthony A: Long and shaggy is really what we’ve been seeing a lot of for men of all ages. Having a longer style doesn’t mean not looking classy. I see a lot of businessmen coming in to the salon wanting to wear longer, shaggy looks. Men are also requesting shears with a lot of texture. Even with the shorter haircuts, we’re still seeing a lot of texture. Lori Huitron, Atlantic Studios Q: What trends are you seeing with women’s cuts and color? A: Everything is going back to a natural look. Women are going lighter and softer for summer, of course. Brunettes are doing caramel highlights as well. As far as cuts and styles go, it’s not about fighting a woman’s natural hair type anymore either. It’s all about accentuating it. If she’s got curls, make it big and sexy. That whole straight and flat look is definitely going out. Lori Huitron, Atlantic Studios A: Believe it or not, the Victoria Beckham graduated bob is so in right now. We’ve had so many requests for that shorter A-line look and for many different variations of it. As far as color goes, blondes are doing more of a beige or caramel tone, depending on their skin tones and eye color and brunettes are straying from highlights and going toward one solid, rich chestnut hue. Michelle Shelton, Bella Salon Q: What do you recommend clients do to help combat sun, salt or chlorine damage this summer? A: I would recommend Gelee Aqua Proof from Kerastase’s Solieil line. It’s like a wetsuit for your hair. If applied beforehand, it will completely block chlorine and salt from damaging the hair. We also have a treatment called the Belmont Steamer, a moisturizing treatment for shiny summertime hair. We use hydrating and protein masks to penetrate the hair using a fine warm mist. It makes hair smoother, healthier and lessens the time it takes to blow it dry. Michelle Shelton, Bella Salon Q: What about repairing hair that has already been damaged? A: Redken has a great cleanser that strips the hair of chlorine, salt and other damaging things, but you need to aggressively moisturize the hair following that process and put back that hydration with a protein or hydro mask. We also carry Diva Care and Diva Curl shampoos, shipped from New York, which re-hydrate because they are water-based and don’t contain harsh ingredients that dehydrate the hair. Any shampoo that has detergent or sodium lauryl sulfate in it will dehydrate your hair so you want to avoid using those. Usually you can tell a product has those ingredients when you get a heavy lather. Lori Huitron, Atlantic Studios Q: Do you offer any special promotions or discounts to Long Beach residents? A: Mention this article and first-time clients will receive 20% off entire service (excluding retail). Michelle Shelton, Bella Salon Scott Shelton, Dean Anthony TLC for the Body and Soul
Spa Treatments and Massage
Q: How important is massage therapy to feeling your best?A: Professional massage therapy is extremely beneficial to you both on a physical and emotional level. Physical benefits include relaxing tense muscles, easing tension headaches, lowering blood pressure and increasing blood flow and circulation. Emotional and mental benefits include reducing anxiety, releasing endorphins, promoting more restful sleep and providing a sense of well-being. After a personalized massage, you should be refreshed, renewed and ready to face the world. Massage isn’t just for a special occasion anymore. Research shows the mental, physical and emotional benefits of receiving regular bodywork. Look at your body like you look at your car. Every few hundred thousand miles, depending on how hard you drive it, you need a tune up. It is the same concept with your body. What you put in is what you get out. Give back to yourself! Erika Pritchard, Executive Fitness & Med Spa Q: What type of massage would you recommend to people who are new to spa/massage treatments? A: People who are new to spas will benefit from a Swedish massage or a European facial. These are great introductory services as well as great basic, standard services. The Swedish massage offers complete body relaxation, while the European facial offers neck and shoulder relaxation as well as deep skin cleansing, exfoliation and hydration. Jennifer Barnas, Senses Day Spa Q: What type of massage would you recommend for someone who is tense and stressed out? A: A perfect remedy to unwind from a stressful day is a therapeutic relaxation massage. This massage incorporates several massage modalities, including Swedish and trigger point techniques. The use of aromatherapy with specific essential oil blends will help your body to release, relax and recover. Erika Pritchard, Executive Fitness & Med Spa Q: What unique structural and aesthetic qualities does your location offer? A: The spa is in a loft building and has high ceilings and exposed structural components such as ductwork and columns. We’ve kept the feel of the spa modern by leaving a lot of these elements exposed. But we created a soothing atmosphere with the colors and decor we chose and created cozy rooms that are neither masculine nor feminine. The design of the spa seems to appeal to both our male and female clients. Jennifer Barnas, Senses Day Spa Q: What types of massage treatments do you generally offer? A: We offer a selection of personalized massage and unique body treatment services including an olive oil hot stone massage and infinity soak tub that magically fills with water from the ceiling. Our therapists customize your treatments based upon your specific needs. Among many other treatments, we offer Pre-Natal Massage, Eucalyptus Foot Reflexology, Face and Scalp Massage and a Rejuvenating Body Polish. Erika Pritchard, Executive Fitness & Med Spa Q: What treatments would you recommend to help people get ready for summer? A: A salt glow or sugar scrub is a great summer treatment to exfoliate the skin and reveal softer, brighter skin. The summer is also a great time for Mystic tanning, which is best done after the skin is exfoliated. These two services work very well together. Our specialty, however, is the Senses Signature Massage or the Senses Signature Facial. These treatments incorporate a 60-minute massage or facial with a soothing herbal foot soak and mini massage, a hydrating paraffin hand treatment and the client’s choice of fine tea or herbal tonic and exotic chocolate. Jennifer Barnas, Senses Day Spa Q: Do you have any special products that you offer your clients? A: We offer skin care products by Jurlique. This brand is known for its organic ingredients, bio-dynamic farming methods and great results. Senses Day Spa is the only spa in the South Bay region to carry Jurlique. We also carry teas by Tea Forte, chocolate by Vosges Haut-Chocolat, foot soaks by Aspara The Art of Engaging Your Senses Aromatics, tonics by Elixir Tonics and bath and body products by The Thymes. Jennifer Barnas, Senses Day Spa Chinese Acupuncture
Q: What are some of the basic treatments
you offer in acupuncture?A: We get a lot of different cases. Usually people who have tried everything else and it doesn’t work. Acupuncture is a whole medical treatment that can work for a lot of things like diabetes, pain, stress, fatigue, and overall well-being. We often find that pain isn’t a physical issue but can be related to stress and the emotions that people are feeling. We usually treat those things with acupuncture and herbs. Although, acupuncture and natural remedies like herbal combinations can help relieve symptoms, they are treatments, not a cure. Most of the time the root cause of pain and fatigue or just not feeling well is a lack of balance in the body. When we are not paying attention to the food we are eating, not getting exercise and working too much the body’s natural processes are slowed down. This creates energetic blockages and throws off the natural balance in the body. Acupuncture frees up that energy, bringing the body back to homeostasis, which makes you feel better, creates longevity and helps you look and feel younger, longer. Q: What advice can you give to those who are hesitant to try acupuncture? A: Acupuncture is a holistic and natural approach to preventative medicine. If you start taking care of yourself early, you have a better shot at longevity. It helps boost the immune system, circulation, stamina, energy and really just aids the body in doing what it’s supposed to do. And the needles are as thin as a hair on your head. The pain associated with Acupuncture is usually no more than a pinch. Another great thing about acupuncture is that we treat people for emotions as well as for the pain brought on by things like stress and anxiety. It really is a customized solution because everything is taken into account when we treat patients — lifestyle, exercise habits, diet and nutrition, etc. We really look at the person as a whole. Sometimes I will talk to someone for an hour just to get an overall idea of what is going on with them in general. Q: What are some of the biggest misconceptions you see with people’s attitudes toward acupuncture? A: With Chinese medicine, a lot of people don’t understand that it treats the whole body and some just see it as a method of pain relief. It’s not a spa type of treatment or a miracle cure but a partnership with us working together to help them have greater health and vitality. It’s also about education. The quick fix is a myth, although most of us want it so bad but we don’t want to work for it. Life doesn’t work that way. Acupuncture is a complete lifestyle as well as a process of self-discovery and learning to be naturally who you are and being comfortable in that space. Amy LeSage, L.Ac., Dipl.
