Spring ForwardBY JOEN GARNICA
With Fresh Colors & Ideas
Spring is right around the corner. Crisp, fresh air, colorful blooms sprouting in the garden, and a great new look for your home’s interior. What could be more tantalizing than welcoming spring with a sun-kissed room or a room so magnificently clean and breezy you can almost feel the cool ocean air blowing through your hair?
![]() Making your home a magnificent place conveys pride in your abode, thereby generating a feeling of delight and joy. This might encourage you to have a gathering of friends and loved ones to celebrate your accomplishments. There you may receive compliments from unexpected places, resulting in a heightened level of cheer in your life. You may return to work Monday morning with a new sense of bliss. Modifying your home’s appearance from fall to spring can be as simple as reworking a few elements in a room to achieve a light and airy spring feel that will propel you into the cheery months of spring and summer. Re-arrange for Change
Is your furniture facing a fireplace? Now that spring is rapidly approaching, re-arrange your furniture to face a large window or French doors. Change the focal point to a lush garden or outdoor fountain. Re-arranging furniture seasonally will always keep your home fresh and exciting and remind you to enjoy the season’s best.Toss the Old
This is the time of year to purge your home of the “extras.” Take this time to spring clean your décor. Remove a few of your least favorite pieces for a simplified look. Eliminate excess décor or wardrobe as a means of opening up space for new things to enter your life, both literally and metaphorically.Give Treasures New Venues
Find new locations for those treasures you just can’t part with. Placing objects in new locations throughout your home will update its appearance. You’ll discover a new appreciation for these treasures, thereby extending their life in your home.Swap Out Throw Pillows
Replace fall-colored pillows in heavy fabrics with lighter, brighter pillows in linens or silks. Fill your sofa with pillows that hint of breezy lavender or fields of peonies.Lighten up Windows
Go from heavy drapes to wisp sheers, which can instantly transform a room into an airy retreat.
![]() Paint the Lamp Shades
Use bold colors that you might not typically find on lampshades for a personal touch and designer feel. If you are not crafty, find your favorite spring hue in a ready-made lampshade.Bring the Blooms Indoors
Snip your favorite garden blossoms. A single flower in a bud vase or a cluster of the same bloom in a mason jar can transform a room. Use blooms throughout your home, and don’t forget the bedside table or the bathroom counter. These splashes of color will reawaken your spirit and put a smile on your face. If you are looking for a longer-lasting effect, use plants. Small indoor plants can give you the same effect as flowers, without the need for frequent replacement.Edible Décor
If your thumb isn’t green, fill apothecary jars, vases, or bowls with fruit. Don’t be afraid to use this typically “kitchen” accent in your living room, dining room, or bedroom. Colorful fruit like lemons, cherries, kiwis, or tangerines in clear glass containers have a superior color punch. I love using fresh fruit throughout my home for edible décor. It is also a great way to promote healthy eating!Re-accessorize
Accessorizing can be fun and whimsical. A place for the unexpected. Buy a botanical book or a coffee table photography book and with a razor blade cut out your favorite pages. Frame a grouping in inexpensive frames for a dramatic effect. Odd numbers look best, for example, three rows of three frames each for a total of nine frames. Create this combination with different, seasonal images throughout the year.Don’t Forget to Look Down
Add a splash of color under your feet with fun area rugs. A bright solid color or clean floral design will definitely bring spring into your design. Favorite spring textures are cotton, sisal, and sea grass rugs.Be Bold
Be adventurous and paint an accent wall or an entire room in a fresh spring color. Imagine the glistening of delectable gelato on a hot Italian summer day. Your favorite gelato flavor can inspire the spring and summer hue for your room.Select hues that speak to you. They might say ethereal and dreamy, like floating in the sky, or soothing and euphoric, like relaxing under the sun’s rays, savoring an apple martini. The goal for springing forward with fresh colors is not to have your room conjure up images of the Easter bunny. Rather, aim to evoke an airy, serene atmosphere—one that just might improve your outlook and open up other aspects of your life |
